On Saturday afternoon at 1:30 pm, just prior to the St. Patrick's day parade, the Cutchogue Fire Department was dispatched to assist the Westhampton Beach Fire Department while they battled a large Brush Fire located along Sunrise highway in the area of Gabreski Airport.
A total of nearly 90 area fire departments and EMS agencies were dispatched throughout the afternoon and into the early evening to provide Brush Trucks, manpower and special equipment to help battle the rapidly growing fire that was being fueled by high winds.
CFD was requested to stand-by at Westhampton Beach FD Headquarters to cover any additional calls in their district. A crew on Engine 8-5-4 responded and stood by over 5 hours until being released around 7:00 p.m. While there the crew handled and an automatic alarm.
Later in the afternoon additional resources from CFD were requested in the form of an ambulance. Ambulance 8-5-17 responded to the EMS staging area near the fire scene. While there members of the CFD Rescue Squad treated an injured firefighter and transported him to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment.
Thank you to all of the dedicated firefighters and responders who worked tirelessly to contain the fire. |
