On Friday afternoon Just before 3:00 pm Cutchogue Firefighters were dispatched to at reported trailer fire at a residence located in the area of 8000 Alvah’s lane in Cutchogue.

Southold Town Police Communications received numerous 911 calls for the fire as a column of black smoke could be seen from a distance as responders rushed to the scene.

Police and Firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy fire consuming a RV trailer adjacent to a small barn to the rear of a residence that was located down a long driveway, set back from the roadway.

A ‘working fire” was transmitted and mutual aid was requested from our neighboring departments to assist to assist at the scene.

Cutchogue Firefighters arrived on scene and began attempting to knock down the fire using available tank water and water supplied from Mattituck and Southold FD’s tankers until a sustainable water supply could be established.

The fire quickly spread to the adjacent barn.

The fire's location was located in an area with limited water supply and the nearest hydrant was located a long distance away. Firefighters had to lay supply hose to the nearest hydrant that was located over 2500 feet from the home in order to supply water to the scene.

Once the water supply was established, firefighters went into a defensive operation, using multiple handlines and master stream from our ladder truck 8-5-3 to fight the fire. Additional handlines were used to protect the main residence that was in close proximity to fire.

The Mattituck Fire Department provided assistance with a Rapid Intervention Team, Engine, Tanker and Hose Truck.

The Southold FD also provided an engine, Tanker and manpower to assist at the scene.

Once the fire was knocked down, firefighters conducted extensive overhaul and cleanup before being released from the scene nearly 3 hours later.

The homeowners were home at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries reported.

As is routine, the exact cause is currently being investigated by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad and the cause of the fire is not considered to be suspicious.

During the fire, Jamesport Fire Department stood by at the Cutchogue firehouse with an Engine in the event of other fire alarms, while the Greenport Fire Department Stood-by with an ambulance.

The Riverhead Fire Department also provided stand-by coverage for Mattituck FD during the fire.

Our thoughts and best wishes are with the family affected by the fire.

The officers and members of Cutchogue Fire Department would like to extend our utmost gratitude to the Mattituck and Southold Fire Departments for their show of Brotherhood as they helped us pack hose and clean up to ensure that we were able to attend a memorial service for one of our members later that evening.
