July 6, 2023

At 2:30 p.m.. on Wednesday Afternoon Morning, CFD was dispatched for a reported gas leak at a residence in the area New Suffok Avenue near Grathwohl Rd. in New Suffolk.

Upon arrival the CFD Chiefs discovered a ruptured natural gas line servicing a home. Contractors using installing a fence had severed the gas line causing natural gas to leak uncontrollably into the air.

Police and Fire personnel were able to quickly shut down the roadway and divert traffic away from the scene while 1st due engine 8-5-4 laid a supply line from a nearby hydrant. Firefighters deployed hand lines to help disperse the gas away from the nearby home.

The gas was initially unable to be turned off by firefighters and the National Grid Gas service was notified to respond. Once on scene National Grid was eventually able locate a shut off valve and secure the leak using special equipment.

An additional crew of firefighters checked the neighboring homes to ensure that there were no other dangers resulting from the leak.

Crews were on scene for over 1.5 hours before New Suffolk Avenue was re-opened to normal traffic.

Over the course of the day CFD Volunteers would respond to 5 calls for service on Wednesday. CFD responded to (3) EMS alarms, (1) Fire/ CO alarm, and (1) gas leak.

Units: Chief 8-5-30, 32, Captain 8-5-50, Engine 8-5-4, Heavy Rescue 8-5-5, Fire Police 8-5-6 &15, Ambulance 8-5-17.
