MVA - CFD Responds to Heavy Rescue on New Suffolk Ave.

Wednesday morning was busy for CFD as then responded 3 alarms in a a two hour period one of which included a serious motor vehicle accident on New Suffolk Avenue.

Just before 7:00 a.m. CFD was alerted to respond to a motor vehicle accident on County Route 48 at the intersection of Cox Lane. Responders arrived to find a two vehicle collision with only minor injuries. One patient was transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for minor injuries.

At 7:21 a.m. while preparing to clear the first scene, Southold Town Police Dispatch alerted CFD for a second Motor Vehicle Accident at the intersection of Moores Lane and New Suffolk Avenue. This accident was dispatched with the addtional information of a subject reported trapped.

Units immediately were released were on the road responding to the second accident. First arriving police and fire department units were confronted with a two-vehicle head on collision. (1) patient was heavily entrapped in the vehicle and would require extrication using heavy rescue tools.

Upon the arrival of Heavy Rescue 8-5-5, firefighters went to work using "the Jaws of Life" and a variety of other tools to free driver. Due to the complexity of the crash the team worked for almost 40 minutes to free the driver. Throughout the extrication the patient was being treated by CFD Rescue Squad personnel and the Stony Brook University First Responded Paramedic.

Because of his injuries and nature of the accident an Suffolk County Police Medi-vac Helicopter was requested.

Once extricated the patient was packaged and transported by CFD ambulance to the Cutchogue Firehouse grounds where he was transferred to a waiting Suffolk County Police helicopter for transport to Stony brook University Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Crews were on scene for over an hour.

At 8:49 a.m. CFD finished out the morning responding to an Automatic Fire Alarm on Commerce Drive.

Units: Chiefs 8-5-30, 31, 32, Heavy Rescue 8-5-5, Ambulances 8-5-15 &17, Engine 8-5-4, Fire Police 8-5-6 &15
