CFD Fire Prevention Program
"PREVENTION THROUGH EDUCATION"

The Cutchogue Fire Department believes in prevention through Education. Each year the members of the Cutchogue Fire Department reach out to nearly 1200 children of the community through various fire prevention programs.
Each year during National Fire Prevention Week, volunteers spend three days at the Cutchogue East, Our Lady of Mercy, and New Suffolk Schools teaching safety. Through the cooperation of the schools, each student has the opportunity to interact with Firefighters and EMT’s in several different activities designed for the various age groups.
Children in the younger grades K-2 are taught using the fire department’s specially designed fire safety trailer. The trailer was purchased in 2003 as a joint purchase between the Mattituck and Cutchogue Fire Districts. It is designed to resemble a small home with a living room, kitchen and a bedroom. Throughout the house children have the chance to learn about an identify hazards in the home such as candles and electrical hazards. Children are also taught about, dialing 911 and the importance of having an escape routes and meeting place. The trailer utilizes artificial smoke to reinforce what is taught.
Children in grades 3-6 are taught about the importance of fire extinguishers. Using live demonstrations children are taught how to handle and operate a fire extinguisher along with the different types of extinguishers and fires. In addition to fire extinguishers students are given a tour of several fire department apparatus on display and are shown the different types of tools that firefighters use.
Throughout the year, members of the CFD Fire Prevention Committee educate youths of the community in several other programs that include fire station visits and visiting local youth groups. These groups have included local pre-schools, cub scouts, girl scouts as well as many other civic groups.
In 2003 The Cutchogue F.D. and Mattituck F.D. joint Fire Prevention Committee was honored for their efforts by the Suffolk County Fire Safety Educators Association as the “2003 Fire Safety Educators of the Year”
Any group, or school interested in touring the Firehouse, or scheduling a presentation is urged to contact the Chiefs office at 734-6907 to make arrangements.
