On Tuesday Afternoon December 18th at about 12:20 p.m. the Cutchogue Fire Department was dispatched to a machinery fire at the Southold Town Solid Waste Transfer Station, formerly referred to as the Town Landfill, located on 6155 Cox lane in Cutchogue.

While responding a large column of smoke could already be seen.

Upon arrival at the scene units were confronted with a large tub grinder that was well involved with fire. The fire was located in the western portion of the landfill facility that is used for compost and brush disposal.

The first arriving units were able to control the fire using the deck gun from 8-5-4 and handlines.

Because the fire was located in an area where there was no water supply available, a mutual aid request for tanker truck was requested from Southold fire department to provide additional water at the scene in order to fully extinquish the fire in the machine and surrounding mulch pile.

Units operated on scene for one and a half hours before being released from the scene.

The Mattituck Fire Department also stood-by at the Cutchogue Firehouse in the event of any calls.

Thank you to everyone who assisted us on this day.
