During the second week of February, the historic FDNY Fireboat Firefighter arrived at its new home in the Village of Greenport, after completing a 9 hour cruise from New York to the East End of Long Island.

The Firefighter was initially commissioned by the FDNY in 1938 and served the city of New York until 2010 before being retired.

The Fireboat once considered the most powerful fireboat in the world, had a long distinguished carreer with FDNY that included being one of two fireboats that supplied water to the World Tade Center site following the attacks of September 11th.

Firefighter was designed by the famous naval architecture firm Gibbs & Cox and was built at Staten Island's United Shipyard, which later became Bethlehem Steel. The vessel uses a diesel-electric system powered by two Winton diesel engines to run its propulsion system and water pumps. The Firefighter can pump 20,000 gallons per minute.

The fireboat was recently aquired by the Fireboat Firefighter Museum with the hopes to preserve and restore the proud vessel to its former glory and use it as a floating museum.

The boat will now call the North Fork home where it will be permanently berthed in the Greenport Harbor.

Shortly after its arrival in Greenport, several CFD firefighters were afforded a special tour given Jeff and the staff of the Mitchell Park marina.

For the next few months the boat will be docked at the the Mitchell Park Marina before being moved to the Railroad dock near the East End Maritime Museum.

The boat arrived in time for the Annual Greenport Fire Department Washinton's Birthday Parade that was held on Saturday February 16th. The Firefighter was open for tours following the parade and welcomed firefighters aboard from across Long Island.
