Throwback Thursday - 1970's MVA

This week we look back at images from a motor vehicle accident occurring in 1970's where a car ran off the roadway and into a tree.

The accident occurred at an unknown location in Cutchogue

Pictured in the picture is CFD's 1966 utility truck, vintage Southold Town Police Cars and a private ambulance.

CFD's Rescue squad was among the first local Fire departments to provide First Aid service beginning in the 1930's.

The Cutchogue Fire Department would respond to assist anyone who was injured or sick and now be able to treat them until the local doctor or ambulance would arrive. Back then the ambulances were provided by the local hospitals, funeral homes and eventually private ambulance service.

The squad would continue to operate in this fashion, providing what is now called "First Responder" service until the 1980's.

1989 marked a significant milestone in CFD history. During this year Cutchogue Fire Department would start to provide full Ambulance Service to the residents to the Cutchogue Fire District. Unlike before, CFD would now not only respond, but also transport the victims to area hospitals themselves. This new service would save valuable time that was often wasted waiting for a private ambulance to arrive.

The Cutchogue Fire Department is proud of our 98 years of dedicated service to the community. We are always looking for any old & historical articles representing our past for display on our website and in our new firehouse.

Community members who have photographs, newspaper clippings, or historical artifacts related to the Cutchogue Fire Department are encouraged to contact the website team at cutfd@optonline.net or reach out to the firehouse at 734-6907.

Photos and clippings can be scanned and safely returned to their owners.

Thank you to everyone who has already contributed to this ongoing project.
