Over 30 Departments Respond to Major Fire at Recycling Center in Riverhead

Early Wednesday morning, around 2:00 a.m., a significant fire broke out at the Crown Recycling Facility located at 472 Youngs Ave. in Calverton. The Riverhead Fire Department, along with mutual aid fire departments and agencies from across the area, responded swiftly to the scene

The Cutchogue fire Department was among the 34 Suffolk County Fire Departments and other agencies that would respond to the blaze.

The fire, which engulfed all four buildings on the property, required the efforts of nearly 250 firefighters to bring under control. By 1:00 p.m.

CFD was initially called at 3:19 am to assist RFD by providing a stand-by engine and Fire Police at the scene.

A crew on Engine 8-5-4 made the response and stood by at Riverhead Fire Departments Station 3 in Calverton, with other assets from Southampton and Farmingville Fire Departments.

8-5-4 would later be called into the scene and provided Decon Support for firefighter Rehab, Crews worked with fellow firefighters from Miller Place FD to set up a decon station and later would also be assigned to water supply.

8-5-4 later drafted from a portable tank as part of a tanker operation to supply ladder trucks operating on the scene.

CFD Fire police assisted with traffic control throughout the morning.

Units were released and would return to Cutchogue by noon.

There would be RFD and units various assisting agencies would remain at the scene throughout the day and Wednesday night conducting extensive overhaul and mop-up operations to ensure that any hot spots were extinguished.
