32 years ago today, on March 18, 1993 Cutchogue Firefighters responded to a fire that destroyed the Historic New Suffolk Post Office and General Store.
Battling freezing and winter conditions, firefighters from Cutchogue and other North Fork Fire Departments battled the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control.
During this fire, Firefighters drafted water from the Peconic Bay using 3 different trucks to supply the water to fight the fire. This fire occurred at a time when no fire hydrants or public water supply existed in our area.
This fire would change the look of the tiny waterfront hamlet for many years to come, as the post office and the general store served as the hub of the tight knit community.
Today, the site is part of the New Suffolk Waterfront Property located at the base of Main St. in New Suffolk near First St..
The Cutchogue Fire Department is proud of our 97 years of dedicated service to the community. We are always looking for any old & historical articles representing our past for display on our website and in our firehouse.
