At 8:15 a.m.. on Wednesday Morning, CFD was dispatched for a reported gas leak at a residence in the area of 7650 Nassau Point Rd. in Cutchogue

Upon arrival the CFD Chiefs discovered a ruptured propane tank servicing a home that was under construction. Contractors using heavy equipment ran over the tanks cover severing the gas line causing Propane (LPG) to leak uncontrollably into the air.

Police and Fire personnel were able to quickly shut down the roadway and divert traffic away from the scene while 1st due Quint 8-5-3 arrived and staged at safe location near the scene. Firefighters deployed hand lines to help disperse the gas away from the nearby home

The gas was initially unable to be turned off by firefighters and Van Duzer Gas service a local distributor was notified to respond. Once on scene Van Duzer was eventually able shut of and control the leak using special equipment.

An additional crew of firefighters checked the neighboring homes to ensure that there were no other dangers resulting from the leak.

However due to the damage to the tank, the gas company would have to safely remove any remaining gas in the tank. A controlled burn was set using a burn off kit designed for this purpose.

Crews were on scene for over 3+ hours before Nassau Point was reopened to normal traffic.

Representatives from Van Duzer gas, CFD and the Southold Town Fire Marshal remained on scene and routinely monitored the situation over the course of the day as the process continued.

Over the course of the day CFD Volunteers would respond to 2 calls for service on Wednesday. While at the gas leak CFD responded to to an additional Fire Alarm on Nassau Point Rd.
