A fire broke out in a Cutchogue home Sunday afternoon.

The Cutchogue Fire Department was activated at 12:29 p.m. for a possible structure fire at a home located on Old Menhaden Rd. in Nassau Point.

The occupants of the home heard popping noises in the basement and were able to call 911 and exit the home after smelling smoke.

Upon arrival of the first fire and police units, it was evident there was a fire in the home as smoke could be seen coming from the home.

Upon further investigation it was found that the basement and first floor of the home appeared to be full of smoke with the conditions changing rapidly.

Firefighters from Engine 8-5-4 made entry to the home and started a search of the home and an interior attack. They were encountered with heavy smoke and high heat conditions as they searched the home.

The fire was discovered burning in the basement.

Hoselines made entry to the basement and quickly gained control and extinquished the fire.

Firefighters were able to locate and save 2 of the family's cats that were trapped in a first floor bedroom. A third cat was later located in the home and sadly perished due to the heavy smoke.

Additional members from Ladder 8-5-3 and Rescue 8-5-5 arrived and assisted with ventilation and other fireground tasks.

A majority of the Fire damage was confined to the basement area, and required extensive overhaul to check for any remaining fire in the ceilings and walls.

The remainder of the home suffered smoke and heat damage.

Water was supplied to the scene by a fire hydrant located near the home.

Firefighters were on scene for approximately 3 hours and traffic was detoured by Fire Police during that time.

No injuries were reported. EMS & Ambulance personnel from the CFD Rescue Squad and Stony Brook University First Responder Unit were on scene throughout the fire.

Mutual Aid was requested from our neighboring Departments. The Mattituck Fire Department responded with a rapid intervention team. Southold firefighters assisted at the scene with an engine and manpower, while the Greenport FD stood by at Cutchogue Fire headquarters with an engine crew.

The Suffolk County Police Department's arson squad is investigating the cause of the fire, and is not deemed suspicious.
