A Night of Training: Sharpening our Skills - Pump & Tanker Operations
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

July 22, 2023

Even though we rely on our hydrant system in a majority of our Fire District, in portions of the Cutchogue Fire Distict and in neighboring Districts there is still a need to utilize alternative water supply sources during a fire. These often include drafting from a fire well, large water sources such as the Bay or ponds and utilizing tankers from our Mutual Aid Departments

We always strive to be prepared. On Thursday Night as part of our monthly program, we trained with the Southold and East Marion Fire Departments and focused on pump operations utilizing a tanker operation.

A series of scenarios were practiced in which we supplied water to our ladder truck 8-5-3 and handlines.

First firefighters set up the Drop tank/porta pond from East Marion's tanker and set up a draft using CFD's Supply engine 8-5-1 from the portable pond as tankers kept it filled.

The second scenario included setting up a tanker relay in which the takers directly fed the supply engine.

Throughout the night firefighters had the opportunity to practice drafting and pumping in a relay scenario while other groups of firefighters focussed on handline operations and ladder/master stream operations.

The night provided valuable lessons in operating efficiently with our mutual aid departments and becoming familiar with their equipment that may respond to assist us.

Thank You to the Southold FD, and East Marion FD for training with us.

Thanks to Firehouse Training Plus for assisting with a great night of training
