On Sunday afternoon at approximatley 4:00 pm the Cutchogue Fire Department was requested to assist the Southold Fire Department with a brush truck at the scene of a fire in wooded area near Mill lane and County Route 48 in Peconic.

Souhtold firefighters located the fire in a remote wooded area west of west of Mill lane in an area where there was limited access by normal vehicles.

Assistance was requested from the Cutchogue and East Marion Fire Departments for their Brush Trucks.

Firefighters found a fire that appeared to be a 15' x 20' abandoned building. the building and remains of other structures was located approximately 1000 feet from the main roads.

SFD was initially able to access the area through a nearby property and used a long handline from engine 8-4-4 to initially knock down the flames that were beginning to spread to the woods and other debris in the area.

CFD's Brush truck 8-5-12 arrived on scene and was able to navigate through the brush into the scene. The crew extinguished any remaining hot spots and assisted the Southold Firefighters with overhaul.

Crews were on scene for approximately 45 minutes.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Southold Town Police Department.
