April 16, 2014

On Tuesday Morning at 0130 hrs, the Cutchogue Fire Department responded to an activated Carbon Monoxide alarm at a residence located on New Suffolk Rd. in New Suffolk.

The alarm was received when the sleeping homeowner was awoken by the sounding of the Carbon Monoxide Detector in the home.

Upon arrival, firefighters were greeted outside by the homeowner who had dialed 911 and had exited the home.

Firefighters entered the home with SCBA’s and Multi-gas meters to measure and detect any CO or other dangerous Gases. After entering, Firefighters immediatley began to register levels of Carbon Monoxide in the home.

Upon finding dangerous levels in the house particularily on the first floor, firefighters meticulously checked the entire building for over a half an hour in attempt to locate the source of the CO.

Eventually the source of the CO was traced back to a malfunctioning gas stove in the home.

Once the source was found, Firefighters disconnected the stove, ventilated the home and ensured that the Air Quality was safe for the residents to enter.

The community is reminded to routinely check the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors in your home.

Thankfully in this instance, because of a working CO alarm, a life was saved.
